It’s all about creating and capturing memorable images that stir the emotions and leave an indelible mark on the soul. Images that perfectly encapsulate a moment in time that you can share and enjoy for ever.

Each DSLR camera empowers the photographic imagination with a raft of technically advanced yet easy-to-use features designed to combine creative scope with perfect image capture.

Here you can read more about what sets apart from the camera crowd.

High resolution LCD screen image review

Single-frame view
(with shooting info)
4-frame index view Standard format Vertical format

Crystal clear image review, with the capacity to zoom in on detail to confirm focus, is a feature of all DSLRs. The 700 and 900 take preview quality many steps further, and the 300 and 350 have Quick AF Live View built into the Variable-Angle LCD screen for flexible shooting and image previewing.

The 200, 300and 350 boast a large 2.7” Clear Photo LCD screen that displays detailed shooting information and histograms (in playback mode) for on-the-spot confirmation of exposure balance and highlight/shadow reproduction. The display automatically switches to a vertical-format when you turn the camera sideways; and to conserve battery power, switches off altogether when you put your eye to the viewfinder.

You can also index view up to 25 frames when you’re searching for and sharing images.

If the 270 ppi screen resolution of the 700 and 900’s 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD was any higher, the human eye would be incapable of distinguishing the difference. That equates to around 920,000 dots of ultra-sharp image display for precise on-the-spot review.

At the touch of a button, the 700 and 900 Quick Navi menu displays for easy adjustment of shooting parameters. And an anti-reflective coating ensures that fine details are easy to see, even when viewing the screen outdoors.

Autofocus for faster accuracy

Every DSLR features a Sony-developed centre-cross multi-point AF (autofocus) system to capture every possible memory with perfect clarity. And the Eye-Start system automatically activates AF as soon as you put your eye to the viewfinder (with a ‘restricted to when the camera is gripped’ optional setting on the 700), so even the time it takes to half depress the shutter has been saved.

All models except the 700 have 9-point systems that provide great freedom with subject framing, quickening response and heightening accuracy when shooting moving subjects. Four focusing modes are available: manual focus, single AF, continuous AF, and an auto AF mode that automatically switches from single AF to continuous AF when the system detects that a subject is moving. The 900 also features Wide AF.

The 700 has an 11-point system and in common with the 900, includes a dedicated sensor that dramatically improves focusing precision when shooting at apertures of F2.8 or larger.

It also features a focusing mode switch and an AF/MF button on the back of the camera allowing you to slip seamlessly between modes without altering your grip or taking your eye away from the viewfinder. By combining AF/MF button switching with the high-speed, high-precision AF mode of your choice, you can enjoy accurate and responsive focusing in virtually any situation.

Thanks to the 900's blazingly fast new Dual BIONZ processing engines, high-speed shutter, high-power coreless motor, and optimised processing sequence control, you can capture ultra high-resolution 24.6MP full frame images at speeds of up to 5 frames per second.

And when aiming to capture the perfect shot of an action scene, you can shoot continuously in JPEG fine mode with all models for as long as your memory lasts.

The 700 can also shoot at up to 5 fps and 3 fps Drive mode is standard in the 200, 300 and 350.

Precision viewfinder

Optical glass pentaprism   Spherical acute matte

For clearer, brighter focusing, the viewfinders of the 700 and 900 feature precision-ground optical glass pentaprisms plus high refractive index eyepiece lenses, treated with an anti-reflective coating to help prevent ghosting.

A spherical acute matte focusing screen aids manual focusing by making it easy to identify the correct focus point.

The 900 viewfinder provides brilliant image previews covering virtually 100% of the area of the 35mm full frame 24.6MP sensor. It also incorporates its own shutter to stop extraneous light affecting the settings when taking long exposure shots like night skies or fireworks.

Quick Navi

When the perfect photo opportunity presents itself, you want fast access to your camera settings. So the 700 and 900 feature Quick Navi to give you easy one-handed access to all the key ones.

Pressing the Function button switches the LCD from standard information display to Quick Navi information display, where you can quickly and easily adjust shooting parameters by choosing them with the multi-selector and rotating the front or rear control dial. So, you can exercise complete control using only the thumb and forefinger of your right hand, avoiding interruption to your creative flow.

The settings accessible via Quick Navi are:

Memory options

The 700 and 900 accept both CompactFlash® and MemoryStick Duo™ recording media and you can select which you prefer to use by default. When the first card fills up, simply switch to the second using the menu facility. Other DSLRs record to CompactFlash® but a (separately sold) card adapter will also allow you to use a MemoryStick Duo™.

Power options

A newly developed high-density InfoLITHIUM battery drives the range of DSLRs. The NP-FM500H delivers 650-750 shots between charges, dependent on the model used and based on tests that included flash 50% of the time.

And there’s never an excuse to run out of juice at a critical moment again, as the battery level is displayed as a quick-view 5-level icon and a more precise exact percentage.

Optional vertical grips are also available for all models. Capable of holding two NP-FM500H InfoLITHIUM batteries, they provide extended power and a full complement of basic camera controls to enhance operating ease during vertical-format shooting.

High Definition connectivity

A single mini-HDMI cable is all you need to connect the 700 or 900 directly to a High Definition TV for simply spectacular slideshows.

And when the cable is connected to a latest generation Full HD BRAVIA LCD TV, PhotoTV HD settings are applied automatically to optimise for still image display; assuring fast screen response and superb image quality. And you can easily control image playback using the wireless Remote Commander included with each model.
